The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
