A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was behind attacks on locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
